Last weekend we had lunch at The Pig, a beautiful rustic restaurant in Brockenhurst. We had been given glowing recommendations of this place by friends, and once we finally managed to visit, after weeks of waiting, we weren’t disappointed.
Set amongst sprawling fields and winding forests, the Pig hotel and restaurant is situated in the small village of Brockenhurst in the New Forest National Park – one of the most beautiful areas in the South of England.
The restaurant prides itself on its organic, locally sourced produce. Tomatoes and garlic from the Isle of Wight, Cornish potatoes, blackberries from the New Forest, to name just a few.
The hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous – I could imagine spending a quiet weekend away here, enjoying the scenery and taking walks out in the spectacular New Forest surroundings.
The restaurant is set in a large glass conservatory, with climbing plants scaling the walls, rustic furniture and cutlery, and the most beautiful floor tiles I have ever laid eyes on.
We ordered a few bits for the table, including pork scratchings, pork belly bits for starters (well, it is The Pig after all!), and rustic sourdough bread with lashings of creamy butter.
I loved the way all of the tables were adorned with herbs and plants grown locally on site.
We ordered chicken and pork as our mains, which came with the most delicious variety of roasted vegetables I have ever eaten. That’s saying something too, as I really am not a fan of veggies! The roast veg that came with my pork was sweet and just melted in the mouth – I think I may be a convert!
The photos below are of my Dad’s Bath Chap – a huge piece of pork, covered in crackling. This was what I had planned to order, before the waitress kindly warned me of the size…
The service throughout was great, the wait staff were attentive without being pushy, and kept our table clear of clutter and left us in peace whilst we were eating.
Dessert was a chocolate tart with blackberry sorbet for Jona, a cinder toffee iced terrine with lemon curd for me, and coffee for my parents (who were being good and avoiding temptation!).
We had such a lovely afternoon here, I just wish we had a little more time to explore and that the weather was a bit brighter so we could have had a walk. Oh well, there’s always next time right?
Have you visited any nice restaurants or cafes in the UK similar to The Pig? We’d love to hear your recommendations!
